Fall Cascading Squares Wedding Cake

Earlier this fall I worked on a wedding cake for a lovely couple who had a very intimate wedding of about 30 people at The Peninsula Hotel in New York City.  While discussing design at my cake studio during our initial tasting & design consultation, the groom fell in love with the design below that I had created for New York Weddings magazine back in the summer of 2010.  Given the theme of fashion oriented cakes, I designed a cake inspired by one of my favorite Monique Lhuillier‘s wedding dresses.  As you can see by their final cake above, the design was altered slightly, changing the tiers to hexagons from octagons, switching up the color palette to fall colors & adding on a few orange calla lilies as a topper.

This cake was comprised of a delicious combination of vanilla cake, soaked with Grand Marnier, filled with lemon moussaline buttercream and fresh strawberries,  frosted in lemon buttercream, and decorated in a combination of fondant and gumpaste.

Buttercream Basketweave Wedding Cake

I was thrilled to be able to work with the stellar team at Parties with Panache on this wedding cake that we delivered to an in-home wedding in Wayne, NJ last month.  Believe it or not, I don’t get a slew of buttercream wedding cake orders, so it was kind of nice to be able to get back to the basics with this buttercream basket weave design.

This cake was an all vanilla cake, filled and decorated in vanilla moussaline buttercream and real roses.

TECCS First Year Celebration Cake

A few weeks ago, Sweet Element was fortunate enough to be able to participate in The Ethical Community Charter School’s First Year celebration in Jersey City, NJ.  We donated a large celebration cake & also mini cupcakes for all the students.  The cake was a combination of chocolate & yellow cake filled with vanilla moussaline buttercream and decorated in fondant & chocolate.  The words around the sides of the tiers: Ethics, Service, Community, Social Justice, Academics & Exploration represented the varied parts of the school’s mission.

We wish the school & all the families continued success & growth in the future!

As a very welcome surprise, I received a number of thank you cards from the students & teachers last week for the cake & cupcakes.  Here are a few of my favorites.

A huge card from one of the classes:

Pop-up cards!

And the one that peaked my interest the most.

I secretly wonder if the cake was just “ok” because the kids only got to eat the cupcakes, because the cake & frosting for both were the same!  Hrm …

J&P’s Wedding Cake

Here’s the latest Sweet Element wedding cake that I made for our friends’ Juliana & Phamco’s wedding this past weekend at Hunan Taste in Denville, NJ.  Their only request was that it be a simple, modern design & lemon cake ~ so that’s what we brought!  The cake was a lemon pound cake filled with lemon curd, lemon buttercream and vanilla buttercream, iced with vanilla buttercream and decorated in fondant.  The best compliment for me was when I saw the bride taking a second piece of cake! 😀

And of course, some traditional & non-traditional client & cake photos …

Yankees Wedding Cake

In the midst of the bitter cold of winter, I find myself looking forward to spring & baseball.  So, finding myself with a little time on my hands & baseball on my mind, I came up with this design for a Yankees wedding portfolio cake based on the Yankees uniforms.  I can’t wait for the 2010 season to begin!

Latest Portfolio Cakes

Here’s a few of the latest portfolio cakes that I was asked to design for an upcoming magazine photo shoot.  The design of the cakes was to be inspired by fashion.  The first cake was inspired by a boutique wedding gown & the second cake by an Italian designer dress.

Deco Wedding Cake

Here’s the latest wedding cake creation from Sweet Element Cakes that was made for an upcoming issue of New York Weddings magazine.  I don’t fancy myself an expert piper by any means, so this was definitely a challenge!  All in all, I think it turned out quite well.  I’m hoping the gold metallic finish on the piping shows up a little bit better in the magazine photos – I don’t think my camera did it much justice!

Latest Wedding Cake

Here’s the latest SweetElement creation … a fall wedding cake made as a wedding gift for a friend. Her request … a simple, elegant, fall-themed (with leaves) cake with her Charlie Brown topper incorporated. I think the end result turned out quite nice. All tiers were comprised of vanilla cake filled with strawberry preserves and frosted in buttercream and fondant. All the leaves were made out of gumpaste, and the tiers were adorned with ribbon on the bases. The biggest compliment (aside from a gushing appreciate bride), was seeing one of the slender female guests at our table eat two pieces of cake … AND yell at the servers who were trying to clear her cake plate when she still had a bite left. Now that’s a true compliment!

Mike & Penny’s Engagement Cake

Without further adieu … here’s the latest SweetElement cake made for one of the cutest couples I know!

Each cake tier was comprised of one layer of devil’s food cake and one layer of yellow cake.  The entire cake was filled and frosted with Italian meringue buttercream, and then decorated in buttercream leaves and painted gumpaste flowers.
